What to Pack for the USA

The United States is too large for one weather assumption. New York in January, Orlando in July, a California coast road trip and a national-park holiday need completely different clothes, so start with your route rather than a generic β€œAmerica” list.

Your USA packing list starts with the non-negotiables

For a long-haul trip, keep the documents and first-day essentials accessible instead of burying them in checked luggage.

Pack for your US route, not for the whole country

New York

Visit The USA describes New York as a city of neighbourhoods, attractions and cultural venues. In practical packing terms, that usually means lots of time on foot. Comfortable shoes, a small day bag and season-specific layers should come before several β€œnice” outfits that never leave the suitcase.

Florida and Orlando

Theme-park days can run from morning until night. Think breathable clothes, supportive shoes, sun protection, a refillable bottle and a compact rain layer. Hotels, restaurants and shops can feel heavily air-conditioned, so a light layer is still useful even on a hot trip.

California and multi-stop itineraries

Do not assume the coast, city and inland sections of your trip feel the same. If you are moving between several regions, pack clothes that layer instead of separate wardrobes for every stop.

USA entry requirements: ESTA is not just a formality

Current UK government guidance says travellers entering or transiting through the United States need the correct travel authorisation before travel: either an approved ESTA under the Visa Waiver Program or an appropriate US visa, depending on circumstances. A valid ESTA does not guarantee entry.

For a typical British passport holder, the passport should be valid for the planned stay, but personal circumstances can affect ESTA eligibility. Previous travel, immigration history or criminal history can change what you need, so use the official ESTA service rather than third-party lookalike sites.

Do this before packing

Confirm your ESTA or visa position early. Do not treat travel authorisation as something to sort at the airport.

What to keep in hand luggage on a UK-to-USA flight

Long-haul flights make cabin-bag planning more important. Keep medication, documents, valuables, chargers and anything needed during the first night with you. A clean top or underwear can be useful if checked baggage is delayed.

  • Passport and travel authorisation details.
  • Phone, cable, headphones and power bank.
  • Prescription medication in appropriate packaging.
  • Glasses or contact-lens essentials.
  • A light layer for the aircraft cabin.
  • Address of your first accommodation.
  • Anything you would struggle to replace immediately.

Use our hand luggage packing list to organise the cabin bag separately from your suitcase.

Extra packing for a US road trip

Road trips create a different set of useful items: phone mounting and charging, offline navigation, water, sunglasses and clothes that work for several environments. If you are hiring a vehicle, check exactly which driving documents your rental company asks for before leaving the UK.

Do not let the car become a second suitcase

It is tempting to pack far more because you will have boot space. You still have to carry everything through airports and hotels. Keep the main luggage manageable and use one small day bag for items that move in and out of the car.

USA plugs and electrical items

The United States commonly uses Type A and Type B sockets. Standard British Type G plugs need a suitable adaptor. The US electrical supply also differs from the UK, so check the input label on higher-powered appliances before using them; a plug adaptor changes the shape of the plug, not the voltage an appliance can accept.

Phones, laptops and many modern USB chargers are often designed for a wide input range, but always check the device label rather than assuming.

USA packing FAQ

Do UK travellers need an ESTA for the USA?

Many eligible British tourists use the Visa Waiver Program and need an approved ESTA before travel. Other travellers need a visa. Check the official rules for your own circumstances.

What adaptor do I need in America?

The USA commonly uses Type A and B sockets. UK Type G plugs require a suitable adaptor, and you should check voltage compatibility for your appliance.

What should I pack for New York?

Comfortable walking shoes, a compact day bag, power bank, travel documents and layers appropriate to the season are a strong base.

Should I pack cash for the USA?

Cards are commonly used, but a backup payment method is sensible. Check foreign transaction fees and make sure you can access funds if a card is blocked or lost.
