Mexico's destinations change what belongs in the suitcase
Visit Mexico describes Cancún as a gateway not only to beaches but also to culture, nature and wider Yucatán travel. That is a useful packing reminder: if you intend to leave the resort, bring proper walking shoes, a day bag and clothing for excursions rather than packing only swimwear and evening outfits.
Mexico entry requirements for British tourists
Current UK government guidance says British tourists normally do not need a visa for a tourist visit to Mexico. Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay, while the Mexican Embassy in the UK recommends at least 180 days because that is the longest tourist stay that may be granted.
At border control you may be asked for a return or onward ticket, proof of accommodation and evidence you can support yourself. The number of days you are permitted to stay is determined at entry, so check the stamp or record carefully.
FCDO travel advice includes regional warnings for parts of Mexico. Your safety check should match the places on your itinerary, not just the word “Mexico”.
If you are visiting Quintana Roo, which includes Cancún and much of Riviera Maya, current FCDO guidance also notes a state tourist tax. Check the live government guidance before travelling so you know the current payment process and proof requirements.
What to pack for Cancún and Riviera Maya
Start with a beach-holiday core, then add excursion gear. Swimwear, sun protection and breathable clothes cover the resort; closed comfortable shoes, a small backpack, water bottle and practical day clothes cover ruins, towns and longer trips away from the hotel.
- Two or more swimsuits if you expect daily swimming.
- Sun cream, sunglasses and a hat.
- Lightweight daytime outfits.
- Sandals plus proper walking shoes.
- Compact rain layer depending on season and forecast.
- Day bag for excursions.
- Type A/B travel adaptor.
Our beach holiday packing list covers the resort side in more detail.
Mexico City is not a Caribbean resort checklist
Mexico City sits high above sea level and is primarily a city-break packing problem: comfortable shoes, versatile layers, a day bag, phone power and weather-aware clothing. Do not automatically pack for it as if you were going to Cancún.
If your itinerary combines Mexico City with a beach destination, layers and mix-and-match clothes are more efficient than trying to create two completely separate wardrobes. Use our city break packing guide for the urban section.
Pack for tropical sun without ignoring rain
In coastal areas, heat and strong sun can dominate the packing list, but tropical weather can also include heavy showers. A light, packable rain layer can be more useful than a bulky jacket. Footwear that dries reasonably quickly is helpful if excursions continue after rain.
Insect protection
Depending on your location, season and activities, insect repellent may be useful. For current health guidance, use TravelHealthPro and official travel-health information rather than relying on a generic packing article.
Mexico plugs and charging
Mexico commonly uses Type A and B sockets. UK Type G plugs require a suitable adaptor. As with the USA, check voltage compatibility on appliances rather than assuming an adaptor alone makes every UK electrical item suitable.
Mexico packing FAQ
Do British tourists need a visa for Mexico?
British tourists normally do not need a visa for an ordinary holiday visit, but the permitted stay is decided at entry. Check current FCDO guidance for your circumstances.
What plug adaptor do I need for Mexico?
Mexico commonly uses Type A and B sockets. UK Type G plugs need a suitable adaptor, and you should check appliance voltage compatibility.
What should I pack for Cancún?
Swimwear, sun protection, breathable clothes, sandals, comfortable excursion shoes, a day bag, travel documents, phone charging and a suitable plug adaptor are a strong base.
Do I need a jumper in Mexico?
It depends on your destination. Air-conditioned interiors, evenings, altitude and inland locations can make a light layer useful even when your beach destination is hot.
